White Oak Nursing Home

General Description:  White Oak of Waxhaw is a 100-bed skilled nursing center located in Waxhaw. They provide long-term nursing care and short-term rehabilitation in their designated rehabilitation wing. For several reasons, most of these residents cannot leave the facility for personal activities, including attending church services. As a result, Southbrook is currently going to them and providing an on-site chapel service twice a month on the 2nd & 4th Saturdays.
Volunteer Ages:  Adults / Groups / Families
Volunteer Needs:  This is a greatly appreciated ministry to nursing home residents who feel lonely and forgotten – and sometimes their families and White Oak staff, too! Providing this worship service takes a team of at least 5 or 6 adults who help residents to/from their rooms, distribute/collect songbooks, lead singing (hymns), accompany singing with piano or guitar, and deliver a 20-minute Bible message. Having children there is also a significant highlight and encouragement for the residents.

Wycliffe Apartments

General Description:  This is a private retirement community for missionaries who have served with Wycliffe, JAARS, or SIL ministries. The property was developed to provide affordable housing for missionaries who are 62+ years old and retiring from the mission field. There are about 40 residents with an average age of about 75. These residents are some of the sweetest people on earth, who are full of remarkable stories about life, faith, and ministry.
Volunteer Ages:  All ages / Groups / Families
Volunteer Needs:  Over the years, we have had an increasing number of opportunities to provide practical needs and relational care for the members of this community. We are continuing to explore new ways of serving these residents through housing repairs, landscaping projects, building maintenance, and relational care/engagement. If you want to learn more about existing needs or discuss possible opportunities, please contact Kasey at the link below.

Community Shelter of Union County

General Description:  The Community Shelter of Union County provides emergency shelter, food, and rehousing for those in need. In Union County, the number of our neighbors living at or below the poverty line, paired with the lack of affordable housing, are the primary causes of people experiencing an episode of homelessness and the need for meals and other daily provisions.
Volunteer Ages:  All ages / Groups / Families
Volunteer Needs:  The primary need for volunteers is through their food services. This includes preparing and serving meals provided three times a day at the shelter, serving with their drive-through pantry each month in the parking lot of the Community Shelter, and an extra monthly food box program for low-income senior adults.

Volunteer Ages:  High School Students
Volunteer Needs: Youth4Abolition sets up chapters in high schools, colleges, and churches across the United States. Each chapter is run by a dedicated student leader with the help of their Y4A Coach and Adult Sponsor. Once the Chapter President is trained on our state-of-the-art curriculum, they deliver the information to their peers throughout the year. We have recently started a chapter at Southbrook and would invite any students (or parents) interested in learning more to reach out to the Adult Sponsor listed below.

Lifeline Children’s Services

General Description: Lifeline serves the local Church by providing resources of training, ministry platforms, and educational pieces to care for the orphans and vulnerable children within their community. We want the children we serve to have forever families, but more than that, we want them to know the truth of the gospel. Our desire is to come alongside Christian missional families with resources they will need to find and nurture their children as they become disciples who make disciples.
Volunteer Ages:  Adults
Volunteer Needs:  Our partnership with Lifeline Children’s Services has been increasing and expanding significantly over the past year. We are currently taking steps towards offering three new opportunities to serve in partnership with Lifeline within the coming months.

  • Worthy - The Worthy Mentor Program is designed to connect local churches with women who have experienced unexpected pregnancies. Some of these women may be walking through pregnancy and considering their options, while others may be healing from abortion. Using a holistic model of care, Worthy church partners offer loving support through one-on-one mentoring relationships that are guided by a 10-week biblical study. Click here: https://lifelinechild.org/worthy/ for more information.
  • Heritage Builders - Without intervention, youth leave the foster care system with little or no positive adult support, limited knowledge of basic life skills, and limited resources. These factors paint a despairing future, with high percentages of unplanned pregnancies, school dropouts, becoming victims of child trafficking, abuse of their future children, and chronic homelessness. Heritage Builders equips local churches by empowering them to advocate in one-on-one relationships, provide life-readiness training, and serve as a connection to resources as older youth prepare to age out of the foster care system. Click here: https://lifelinechild.org/heritage-builders/ for more information.
  • Families Count - Through Families Count, local churches have a platform to minister to and walk with broken families to help them be restored and preserved. Roles needed within this ministry include Coordinator(s), class Co-Leaders (husband & wife), and individual mentors. Adopt A Global Partner

General Description: We are very grateful for the men and women with whom we are able to partner in taking the Gospel to the nations! Although many of them are stationed domestically and have access to regular fellowship and community with other believers, many live outside of the country where this is limited or unavailable. This can have a very negative impact on their personal health and even affect their longevity in ministry. We want to invite YOU and/or your GROUP to help ensure that all of our Mission Partners feel loved, appreciated, cared for, and connected to the body of Christ!
Volunteer Ages:  Adults / Groups / Families
Volunteer Needs: Although we encourage each family/group to develop the details of their own strategy, here are three core areas to consider:

  • Communication  Taking the initiative to get to know them personally and build relationships that extend beyond their mission work, roles, and responsibilities.
  • Care — As relationships are built, an awareness of personal needs and concerns is naturally exposed. Consider ways your group might be able to pray for them, extend encouragement, and send written letters or care packages. Be sure to involve any children in your Group.
  • Consistency — It can be common for global partners to hear from others rarely. Often, they are left with the responsibility of communication through ministry updates, newsletters, and various reports, but seldom receive people consistently pursuing and checking in on them. It’s been shown that when a global worker is loved and cared for by others, it increases their longevity of service by 3 - 5 times the average.
